13th April 1967 saw the opening of the first European gallery completely devoted to photography in Milan, on via Brera 10. Over its 30-year history, Il Diaframma – built at the behest of Lanfranco Colombo – represented an important reference point for the development of the culture of photography in Italy. Our exhibition honours Lanfranco Colombo’s activity through the works of some of the many photographers who displayed their photos at his gallery, in a scenario bringing together different genres and styles (already renowned names like Berengo Gardin and Davide Mosconi, and others who were unknown at the time like Gabriele Basilico), in a deliberate display of variety allowing a vast audience to approach photography.
