Imagery is often far removed from reality. A clear example is the word “tzigano” which once evoked a romantic soul and conveyed the fascination of the world of gypsies. A fascination that is completely lost today. Andrea Ciprelli’s photographs, however, dress up with that lost aura and relate, without prejudice, the gypsy soul. In order to produce this reportage, the photographer was in close contact with the Romani community that lived in the ( now dismantled) Roma camp in Lungo Stura Lazio, in Turin. He thus offers a participatory and affectionate portrait of a community, free from stereotypes and at the same time from mythicisation.
