Rizzini has put together a socially impactful photo reportage somewhere between news report and memory. In the years with Milan at the height of its nightlife and the corrupt Tangentopoli system, as well as in later years, Italian political life denied and underestimated the presence of the Mafia in the north. A presence suffered by the subjects of this reportage. Their stories and fierce battles tell us that the Mafias do exist in Northern Italy but also that, despite their power, they’re not unbeatable. And that recognising the “palm tree line” (the climatic line beyond which palm trees bloom and which keeps moving north, according to Leonardo Sciascia’s The Day of the Owl) is the first step towards the reestablishment of legality.
