Face masks are symbols of protection, as demonstrated by this juxtaposition of two research projects that are distant in time but psychologically close. Roberto Polillo documents their use with images from his personal archives: taken in 2016 in Vietnam, they are a very expressive documentation of how the rapid development of private two-wheel motorisation has led to such a high level of pollution that everyone is forced to wear them. Massimo Facchinetti’s AiutArci a Milano project uses portraits to tell the story of the activities of young volunteers from Emergency and Arci in Milan who were committed to helping the most vulnerable during the first period of the pandemic – April and May 2020.
