Under a spell is the result of a trip the photographer made to Mali in the 1990s, when public opinion still wasn’t familiar with a number of issues. Living with the indigenous Peul, Tuareg and Bambara peoples, Schattner was able to observe and combine: by taking in situations, places, characters, architectural and archaeological dimensions, he portrayed the local people (in their own environment and landscape) wearing haute couture clothes, and by doing so hybridising that still currently dominant and globalizing western fashion system.
