Le città sono alberi, ogni stratificazione, ogni nuovo stile e modo di costruire sono un anello nella vita delle città. Quello di Mumbai è un paesaggio contrastato: in crescita iperbolica, tanto quanto iperbolico è il divario tra ricchezza e povertà. Le sue stratificazioni si collocano a due estremi: gli slum che strisciano a vista d’occhio verso un orizzonte dove nuovi ed eleganti palazzi si fanno largo fino al cielo. Eppure la storia della città e parte dell’economia risiede in quegli slum. La ricerca fotografica condotta da Giovanni Hänninen nasce da una collaborazione con Studio Mumbai Architects e mette in luce la stratificazione urbana della città di Mumbai. —

Cities are trees: every stratification, every new style and way of building, are links in the life of cities. Mumbai is a contrasting landscape: hyperbolic growth, as well as a hyperbolic gap between wealth and poverty. Its stratifications are located at two extremes: the slums that sprawl towards a horizon where new and elegant buildings make their way up to the sky. Yet the history of the city, and part of the economy, reside in those slums. The photographic research conducted by Giovanni Hänninen stems from a collaboration with Studio Mumbai Architects and highlights the urban stratification of the city of Mumbai.
