Coney Island, nel territorio di Brooklyn, è stato nel 1903 il primo parco divertimenti a chiamarsi Luna Park e come tale da allora è entrato nell’immaginario collettivo. Da molto tempo, tuttavia, la realtà è un’altra e Maurizio Coppolecchia la riprende nel 2009 cogliendone gli aspetti più contradditori. Da una parte la perdurante voglia di svago e i tanti luoghi di ristoro nel luogo dove è stato inventato l’hot dog, dall’altra giostre ferme, insegne scolorite con scritte inutilmente invitanti che nascondono cortili colmi di detriti. Con sguardo rigoroso immune alla retorica e riprese audaci l’autore crea una vera e propria estetica dell’abbandono.

Coney Island, in the Brooklyn area, was the first amusement park to be called Luna Park in 1903, and as such it has since entered the collective imagination. For a long time, however, the reality of the place has been different, and Maurizio Coppolecchia captured the most contradictory aspects of it in 2009. On the one hand, the enduring appetite for entertainment and the many places of offering food and beverage in the place where the hot dog was invented, and on the other hand, stationary carousels, faded signs with unnecessarily inviting inscriptions that reveal courtyards full of debris. With a rigorous gaze immune to rhetoric, and daring shooting, the author creates a true aesthetic of abandonment.
