Recentemente restaurate dall’Associazione SOS Archivi, le 48 stampe all’albumina di Antonio Beato – conservate nell’Archivio del Touring Club Italiano cui vennero con tutta probabilità donate da un socio che le aveva comperate in Egitto – vengono per la prima volta esposte al pubblico. Stabilitosi nel 1860 prima al Cairo e poi a Luxor, il fotografo aveva lì avviato una fortunata attività di vendita delle sue riprese dei monumenti e dei luoghi di quella antica civiltà. Sono opere rigorose, essenziali, lontane dalla retorica del pittoresco e per questo ancora cariche di un antico fascino. Saranno esposti anche album fotografici coevi sull’antico Egitto.

Recently restored by the SOS Archive Association, the 48 albumen prints by Antonio Beato – preserved in the Archive of the Italian Touring Club, to which they were probably donated by a member who had bought them in Egypt – are for the first time shown to the public. Having moved, in 1860, first to Cairo and then to Luxor, the photographer set up a successful business selling his shots of monuments and places of that ancient civilization. They are rigorous, essential works, far from the rhetoric of the picturesque, and for this reason they are still full of an ancient charm. Coeval photographic albums on ancient Egypt will be exhibited together with the works.
